An epidemiological study on diabetes mellitus was done in the areas of Kurai-, Changsung-,Kwangsan-, Hwasun-, Koksung-, Bosung-guns, and Kwangju city, Korea for 5 months from September, 1971.
Selected examinee were occupational persons of 14, 082 cases of which 13, 032 cases were male and 1, 050 cases were female.
At first glycosuria was detected by the testing with Tes-tape, and the cases of post-pr dial glycosuria were applied to standard glucose tolerance test.
The results of;survey disclosed as follows:
1. Positive rate of glycosuria revealed .3. 18 per cent (447 of 14, 082 cases). Male shoed .20 per cent (418 of 13,032 cases) of positive rate of glycosuria and female 2.76 per cent) (29 of 1, 050 cases). The older had more higher positive rate of glycosuria.

2. Of 294 cases of -glycosuria .229 (77.9%) showed abnormal glucose tolerance test.
3. Prevalence: rate of diabetes mellitus was 2.48 percent, consisting of 2.52 percent of male and
1.70 percent of female. Differences between the age groups in prevalence rate disclosed as follows;
29 years old 0.82%
30-39 years old 2.18%
40-49 years old - 3.53%
50-59 years old 3.17%
60 years old 6.33%
4. Subjective symptoms were fatigability (79.5%), weight loss (5.19%) impotence (12.2 %),
neuralgia (12.2%), thirst (27.5%), polyuria (30.1%), and polyphagia (22.3%)
In 71.6 percent of cases, the presence of the disease had not been recognized until this survey.
5. There were differences between fasting glycosuria rate and hyperglycemia rate, the former
being 45.85 percent and the latter 78.60 percent.
6. Complications were neuropathy (12.2%) nephropathy (10.5%) hypertension (8.3%), retinopathy (5.7%) and pulmonary tuberculosis (3. 1%)
